Bouncing Back with Boldness - Re-entering the Workplace After a Break

Bouncing Back with Boldness - Re-entering the Workplace After a Break

June 18, 20253 min read

Hey sis,

I see you....

The time has come for your to re-enter the workforce and you're dreading it.

You're getting that Monday Morning feeling even though it's a weekend because you know things are about to change for you again.

Coming back after some time away might feel like trying to jump into a moving train.

It might be a pace that you're no longer used to.

An environment that feels intimidating or unfamiliar and you might start to doubt whether you can do this.

But sis...the YOU that bossed it before is still there; you just come with a new set of experiences.

I felt like a newbie, but without the luxury of actually being the newbie.

I remember returning to work after maternity leave and it was a shock to the system.

I felt lost. I felt inexperienced. There were new faces, less old faces and a whole bunch of new ways to do things.

I felt like a newbie, but without the luxury of actually being the newbie.

It took me a while to adjust and it really messed with my confidence and I questioned whether this is where I wanted to be...

If I knew then what I know now, I would have been able to bounce back with boldness and not allow self-doubt to linger for as long as it did.

That is why I am sharing this with you so you don't have to struggle in the same way.

Here's 3 ways to help you step back into the workplace with boldness and not self-doubt after having some time away:

re-entering the workplace after a break

1. Reframe That Timeframe

When you look at the time away from the workplace as just working in a different setting, you'll see it not as a gap in your work history but period of growth.

Whether you were away to heal mind, body and soul, parent or care for someone, think about what you were doing during that time, what you were able to glean, such as, patience, organisational skills, the ability to slow down. These are transferable skills that can help you in your transition back to your work environment - like can we sign a petition to get 'parenting' as a recognisable skill on our resume/CV?

2. Don't rush

The desire to rush and catch up will be strong but the risk of overwhelm will be high. Instead start with small tasks where possible that will help build confidence and routine. Work our building micro-momentum until it's almost like you never left.

3. Express your needs

Asking for help and support is not a weakness. A healthy workplace and organisation that values it's workers should be more than ready to provide what is needed for those returning to work. But sometimes that doesn't always happy automatic or in the way that you need. So don't be afraid to express your needs. Whether it's flexibility, feedback or a mentor, being bold means remembering to prioritise your needs - being clear about what support will help you.

you never lost your mojo

See your time away in a positive light, take your time readjusting so you do not overwhelm yourself. Advocate for yourself too - your needs are important.

So sis, remember, you don't need to prove anything to anybody - you never lost your mojo.

And that's a wrap.

Until next time sis,

Walk Boldly
